Fashion flings that will not bust the budget
published: Saturday | November 1, 2008

Elisabeth Salmon, Gleaner Writer

With high prices, stock plunges and employee cutbacks on the rise, it's easy to see how your Saturday shopping sprees can become low on your priority list during the global economic downturn.

Saturday Life, however, offers an alternative to your wardrobe worries by putting your creativity to the test and allowing you to recycle your primary pieces to make them wearable for both day and night.

  • Basic

Brown trench coat-inspired dress with double-breast button detail and tie-waist belt.

  • Daytime

Adding femininity to this dress is key. So complement its masculine design by breaking up its overall appearance with a variety of shapes.

Try bronze, circular drop earrings and a square ring with white swirl imprint. Include a zebra-striped bangle alongside a gold bangle to brighten up your look. Maintain your daytime ease by pairing this trench with metal-embellished gold flats and, of course, a large bronze tote.

  • Night-time

Metallic pumps immediately transform your look from day to night. Complete your polished evening ensemble by adding a medium-size white clutch to add light to your primary earth tone.

Don't be afraid to add some bling with a long, link chain with bold elephant pendant and matching earrings as well as a chunky gold bracelet.

Tip: Pull your hair back to emphasise the bold collar on this dress.

  • Basic

Yellow tube dress with green and orange breast detail.

  • Daytime

Emphasise this flirty dress by using the secondary colours as pallets for your accessories. Try adding a bold, orange stone bracelet alongside teardrop jade earrings embellished with gems. Don't forget your strappy, green sandals and a neutral - perhaps a large beige handbag.

  • Night-time

A colourful floral wedge adds panache to the evening version of this outfit. Complement the rest of your look with a deep-green clutch with gold buckle, a painted bracelet and an extra long pair of gold drop earrings to add depth to the bare neckline.

Tip: Mix graphics to add character to your look.

  • Basic

    Sleeved, high-waist teal dress.

  • Daytime

Keep comfortable and stylish during the daytime with complementary coloured purple ballet flats. A charcoal-coloured square bangle and pewter square earrings with vine detail add structure to this soft silhouette.

A faux snake-skinned handbag with suede embellish-ment completes this polished, yet easy day look.

  • Night-time

Adding a bronze clutch, key and lock pendant chain and a leopard asymmetrical bangle provides just enough shine and dimension to transfer this primary look into a chic night outfit.

Patent, slingback, black platforms with gold buckles perfectly round out this look.

Tip: Wear your hair down to add even more silk to this soft look.
