The Editor, Sir:Once again, heavy rains have forced the closure of the Bog Walk gorge. Of even greater concern, several persons were trapped in the gorge yet again. The request has been made before for the gorge to be abandoned as the primary route of transportation to the north coast, which remains vital for tourism interests.
I cannot, for the life of me, understand why the policymakers consider putting a toll road from Sandy Bay in Clarendon to Williamsfield in Manchester at this time, when the existing road structure into Manchester seems appropriate right now.
Like so many other things, it seems that politics is driving that decision too. I am adding my voice to those who have called for a full tolling of the road from Spanish Town to Ocho Rios, as a matter of priority.
And, while I am at it, I am reminding the policymakers that perhaps the worst main road in the country today is between Harbour View and Morant Bay, and when it rains heavily that segment becomes impassable, sometimes for several hours.
Vital corridor
That eastern corridor is vital to thousands (including school children) travelling into Kingston, not just from St Thomas but from places such as Manchioneal and Hectors River in Portland. That represents another segment of road that should be prioritised ahead of a toll road from Sandy Bay to Williamsfield.
