Discontent in sugar sector
published: Monday | November 3, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE PROPOSED divestment plan of the state-owned sugar industry and the promise to the workers that 14 weeks' notice pay would have been given to them on September 30, has left the workers, their families and their various communities with great disappoint-ment, frustration and discontent.

Sugar production is Jamaica's largest agri-business and its cultivation and production are major employers of labour. A very large number of persons depend on the industry, in one way or the other, for their existence.

Social instability

Today, however, with the level of uncertainty that surrounds the industry, sudden disruption can lead to social instability.

Let us work together for the future and survival of that vital sugar industry.

I am, etc.,
