Diaspora key to Jamaica's future
published: Monday | November 3, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

In response to the high volume of letters from your readers regarding the many and varied problems we are encountering here in Jamaica, I would like to simplify the complex picture they paint because, in reality, we only have one problem and it is the breakdown of law and order.

If law and order were re-enforced, then all of our other concerns will be solved.

No country can prosper while under siege by criminals. It is pointless to try, criminals won't voluntarily lay down their weapons or simply disappear by magic; they must be put away.

Politicians can meet in Parliament and waste their time discussing all the issues they wish but, until they focus on and solve the one related to law and order, they will fail regardless of their political affiliation. The People's National Party (PNP) failed and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is also failing to date.

Crime fighting

The JLP still has time to face the reality of failing, unless it diverts focus to crime fighting. Judging on their first year in power, it is clear they just don't get it. I do believe that both the PNP and JLP are too closely affiliated to criminals to be effective in enforcing law and order, I also believe that this problem of crime can only be solved by Jamaicans living abroad, yes therein lies our answer; in the very people we like to label foreigners and returnees.

Jamaicans living abroad, their offspring and returnees, hold the key to the future of Jamaica

We need a third party pre-dominantly made up of Jamaicans abroad.

I am, etc.,

G. PARKER
