Time to move on solar energy
published: Tuesday | November 4, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

In these times of high energy bills - at the gas/diesel pump, in the home, at the office - I would like to see Jamaica and Jamaicans take more of an interest in the one resource we have so much of, yet pay so little attention to - the SUN.

Solar energy has reached the point where it is now possible to take your house off the JPS grid.

It would make the hybrid cars a more feasible economic alternative than they are now, and has the potential to reduce the amount of taxpayers' money that goes towards the tremendous overhead associated with electrical bills at the hundreds of government offices scattered around the island.

The problem

The problem with it has always been money. It costs too much for the average person to start to even realistically thinking about it. The average person has to take out a bank loan to support even a partial system.

We need additional government initiatives and incentives to push an islandwide solar power programme.

Let us take drastic action to reduce our dependence on oil, quickly.

I am, etc.,
