Breese brings form to Jamaica
published: Tuesday | November 4, 2008

Jermaine Lannaman, Gleaner Writer

Breese

All-rounder Gareth Breese was in spanking form yesterday during Jamaica's second practice match for the regional one-day tournament at Melbourne Oval.

Breese, 32, who in 2009 tendered his resignation from Jamaican cricket before going on to represent Durham County in the English Division One Championship, made a game-high 34 and claimed an innings-topping 2-24, for Baugh's XI, who went down to a 49-run defeat against Lambert's XI.

It's quite a modest return for Breese, who it is understood still wants to represent Jamaica.

The question was put to chairman of selectors, Ruddy Williams.

Williams, in his response, said the door was never closed as it was he who had tendered his resignation in 2005, and should he want to represent the country the door is still open.

"If he is to reconsider his decision, it is something we would have to discuss," said Williams. "He is a professional and has always showed interest in preparing himself, helping others.

Already selected

"If he wants to represent the country again, it would be for the four-day competition as at present the one-day team has already been selected and is well advanced in their preparation for the tournament. Training for the four-day competition has not started as yet and will begin in two weeks," Williams declared.

Only four weeks ago, Breese made an unbeaten 121 in the final round of the English Division One Championship, which secured the title for Durham.

Scores, in what was the second of five scheduled practice matches, the third of which will be held today, is Lambert's XI 149 off 49.1 overs - with Breese and Bevon Brown claiming 2-24 and Donovan Sinclair 2-39, Horace Miller, 26, Tamar Lambert, 19; Baugh's XI 100 - Breese, 34, Nikita Miller, 17, Brendan Nash, 15, Gavin Wallace 2-10, Andrew Richardson 2-15.

The regional tournament, which will be without top West Indian players due a one-day international series against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, will be held in Guyana beginning next week Friday with Jamaica, the defending champions, scheduled to leave on today.
