The health benefits of running, or any other form of physical exercise, are well known. Research has shown that many cancers, particularly of the breast and colon, are higher in persons who are obese.
According to consultant physician Dr Karen Phillips, in Jamaica, there is a 30 per cent prevalence of obesity in women. Running can help to control weight, even during pregnancy.
Running and pregnancy
Dr Phillips explains: "Maintaining regular exercise during pregnancy can help expectant mothers to stay healthy and feel their best. Jogging can be done in moderation, especially if it was being done before pregnancy." Persons who run, maintain a healthy weight, sleep better, have a healthier appetite and are generally happier than those who are less active. Dr Phillips cautions, however, that "any form of exercise being considered during pregnancy, must only be done after consultation with a doctor".
Exercise, including running, may also help prevent gestational diabetes and contribute to shorter or easier deliveries. It may also help women who suffer from monthly dysmenorrhoea or 'period pain'.
Some of the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) include tender, swollen breasts, headache, fatigue, sweet cravings, stomach cramps, backache, feelings of aggression, mood swings and depression, among others.
Dr Phillips notes that "although not demonstrated in rigorous, controlled studies, there is suggestive evidence that exercise may help relieve PMS". Many women report that though they might not feel like running during their period, once they do, they feel much better. This may be attributed to the feeling of euphoria that running induces due to the increase in endorphins. Running also causes water loss through perspiration, so it might also help to lessen bloating and water retention.
Runners are also advised to wear an adequate support bra to alleviate the problem of tender breasts.
Menopause
Running eases the discomforts of menopause by improving sleep patterns and stabilising erratic moods that often accompany this period of changing hormones. It also helps control weight gain associated with this period.
The annual Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K being staged in Negril, on December 6, presents a great opportunity for women to change their lifestyle and improve their overall health and well-being. There is also the added bonus of winning thousands of dollars in prizes, while enjoying the thrill of being in beautiful Negril.
