Draw pride from Jamaica's athletes - PM
published: Thursday | November 27, 2008

Prime Minister Bruce Golding on Tuesday called for leaders of advertising agencies and media houses to help unite the nation in a manner reminiscent of the wave of pride unleashed through Jamaica's successful performances at the Olympic Games in China.

"We can find common ground when we share in something ... . If we can do that in athletics, there is no reason why we cannot do that in so many other spheres of life," Golding said.

The prime minister was speaking at the launch of the AdCouncil of Jamaica's 'Every Jamaican Can' campaign, which was held at the Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.

Historic performance

The campaign, which is the first for the agency, creatively incorporates the success of the Jamaica's historic performance at the Summer Games to inspire nationwide excellence.

Jamaica took home a record haul of 11 medals - six gold, three silver and two bronze. Lightning-fast sprinter Usain Bolt, The Gleaner's Man of the Year, won three gold medals in world record times, an unprecedented feat. Bolt was named the Athlete of the Year in Monaco on Sunday.

Golding explained that the campaign would energise youth to overcome obstacles.

He added: "This message to every Jamaican is that we do not have to be as awful to each other and as violent as we are ... we can be a better people."

'Yes, We Can'

In closing his address, the prime minister charged that there was nothing Jamaicans cannot achieve and there is no goal too high. "I can, you can, all of us can," he said, expropriating the popular slogan of United States President-elect Barack Obama's campaign, 'Yes, We Can'.

The AdCouncil of Jamaica is a non-profit organisation and is dedicated to addressing significant public issues through outstanding and sustainable media campaigns to stimulate positive, measurable behavioural changes.
