The Editor, Sir:I was rather perturbed to find out that there are teachers in the education system who are still abusing our children in the name of punishment. I was rather horrified when I saw pictures of swollen skin and scars that were inflicted on my child by a male teacher who refused to listen to the child, but rather dished out what he thought was just punishment with a piece of stick. It begs the question; can we really trust some of these people's rationality?
When contacted, the teacher showed no signs of remorse. In fact he went on to admit that it was not the first child he had caned. Hasn't he heard that the government has removed corporal punishment from schools?
Ignorant
Obviously, he saw nothing wrong with his actions or he is too ignorant to realise what he has done. Somebody needs to remind him that the Childcare and Protection Act (2004) prohibits the use of corporal punishment in school. Besides, there are many other ways in which a child can be punished and punishment should fit the crime.
I believe that effective discipline helps children to grow up and be well adjusted; ineffective discipline develops aggression, hatred and disrespect. The relevant authorities need to step in and help to close the chapter on those who continue to exploit our children in the name of punishment.
