There must be a reason in the cosmos, giving December 5 Jamaicans of distinction including public relations guru Jean Lowrie-Chin, a prime minister and a CEO.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding

Bruce Golding, the eighth prime minister of Jamaica, showed an interest in politics from an early age, his father being a politician as well as a teacher.

At age 21, he was selected by the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) to be a candidate for West St Catherine. At 24, when he won the seat, he became (and still is) the youngest person to be elected to the House of Representatives.

He also went on to be member of parliament for what was then South Central St. Catherine (later reconfigured as Central St Catherine). He now represents West Kingston.

In the early '90s though, Golding left the JLP to form the National Democratic Movement (NDM). He would return to the JLP in 2002, shortly before the general election of that year. He was elected unopposed as leader of the JLP in February 2005.

Last year, he led the JLP to its first victory in 18 years. Many happy returns Bruce.

Lascelles Chin

If there was ever a picture of the hard-working businessman, Lascelles Chin, might be the face in it.

The CEO of LASCO has turned a bright idea into a mega player with distributors reaching the Caribbean, United Kingdom and beyond.

His first business was National Trading Company and, after many other business endeavours, he overhauled Versatile Packing Ltd and the name later changed to Lasco Foods Ltd. This was in 1992 and 16 years later it has literally grown new branches including LASCO Distributors, LASCO Financial Service Limited and the LASMED line of products.

Everything from food items to medicine, LASCO offers something for everybody at competitive prices. With more than 45 years in business, he just keeps rolling.
