Gardner
The Reverend Dr Paul Gardner, president of the Moravian Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, has been elected president of the Worldwide Moravian Church (The Unity).
The Moravian Church has its business headquarters in London but its registered office in Herrnhut, Germany. Gardner is the second Jamaican to be elected to this position with the late Bishop Selvin Hastings serving as president from 1972-1974.
Moravian missionaries came to Jamaica from Germany in 1754.
The Portland police are continuing their search for two men who murdered 61-year-old retired banker Herbert Salicram at his house at Grange Hill Flat, Manchioneal, Portland, on Monday night.
Police report that Salicram was at home with a relative when they saw a liquid seeping under a back door.
Salicram opened the door to investigate and was attacked by two men who stabbed him several times. His attackers robbed him of an undetermined sum of money, then tied and doused him with kerosene oil and set him on fire before making their escape.
The police, who were summoned, were assisted by residents in putting out the fire.
Sprayed cabbage on the market
Consumers are being urged to be careful when purchasing cabbage, particularly in the Corporate Area and St Catherine this week.
This follows the theft of a large quantity of cabbage which was recently sprayed with insecticide at a farm at Copper, Devil's Race Course, Guy's Hill, St Catherine.
It is reported that a farmer used insecticide and other chemicals to spray a crop of cabbage.
However, between Monday night and Tuesday morning, thieves went to the property and harvested the crop.
The insecticide is potentially fatal if ingested.
A prosecution witness was hopping mad yesterday when defence lawyer Berry Bryan suggested that, in a jealous rage, the witness and two other men "attacked and chopped" 64-year-old Ambassador Peter King to death.
"I am going to say I think you are insane, I think your behaviour is reprehensible and rude," the witness replied.
Bryan later admitted to Senior Puisne Judge Marva Macintosh that he did not have evidence for the conjecture.
The witness, who admitted on Monday that he was a homosexual, was being cross-examined yesterday about statements he had given to the police.
