Brevitt and Donovan were elected at an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee of the Conference last Tuesday at the Conference headquarters in Mount Salem, St James.
In accepting his new position, Brevitt thanked the committee for the confidence placed in him and pledged by God's grace to keep the growth and development of the Conference as the central focus of his mandate.
Tremendous privilege
"It is a tremendous privilege to serve the church in this capacity at this pivotal moment in Earth's history," said Brevitt. "I have a good team to work with and, with the resounding note of unity that I am hearing, I am confident that our future is bright. We are upbeat despite the economic challenges that abound. With the usual guidance from the administrators of West Indies Union Conference (WIU) and consultations with other fields, we will be able to chart a course for Adventism in this region that will keep us on the frontline of the work."
Prior to his election as president, Brevitt served as secretary of WJC, a position he occupied since 2002. As a pastor and church administrator, he has been employed to WJC since 1985 and has served the Adventist church in various capacities. He has also served the Conference as director of Family Ministries and Stewardship.
Education
A graduate of West Indies College (now Northern Carib-bean University) and of Andrews University, Brevitt holds a bachelor's degree in theology and a master's degree in religion.
Brevitt is married to Joan Reid, principal of the Harrison Memo-rial Preparatory School in Montego Bay and they are parents of two girls, Jodene Rochae and Joanne Charlene Charose.
Due to the appointment of Pastor Brevitt as president, the post of secretary became vacant. This was filled by Williams, who previously served in the present administration as personal ministries and community services director.
Pastor Derek Bignall, president of WIU, presided over the meeting.
The position of president became vacant due to the appointment of Pastor Glen O. Samuels as secretary of (WIU).
The Adventist Church in West Jamaica Conference has more than 70,000 members worshiping in more than 207 congregations. It comprises the parishes of St James, Westmoreland, Hanover and St Elizabeth.
