Arnett buck losing trend against BT

Arnett Gardens withstood constant pressure in an area derby played at a frenetic pace and broke their trend of losses to Boys' Town in the Digicel Premier League this season with a 1-0 win at Collie Smith Drive yesterday.

Kevin Wilson made the telling blow at the seventh minute by netting a magnificent free kick into a very strong wind. He struck the ball powerfully and bent it viciously, curling it around the wall from near 25 yards on an unstoppable path into the pigeon hole at the near post.

Goalkeeper Kirk Porter could only watch, then retrieve the ball from the net.

There was as much joy as there was grief, with almost an equal share of spectators witnessing the Trench Town derby, among teams whose home grounds are on the same street.

New leaders

In the previous two rounds this season, Boys' Town fans were happy after inflicting 1-0 wins against their neighbours.

Defeat in this third confrontation left them joint third on 39 points, five adrift of new leaders Habour View, who beat Village United 1-0 on a Dickoy Williams 76th-minute goal at Harbour View Mini Stadium.

Arnett stayed seventh on 32 points, two off fifth-place Waterhouse who also bucked a winless trend this season against Portland's St Georges, beating them 2-0 at Drewsland Mini Stadium.

Total team effort

"We came out and worked hard for this, it was a total team effort," said Arnett Gardens' player/coach, Fabian Davis, of the gutsy victory. "It was a great derby game. I've been saying all-season long that once we put the ball in the back of the net, we'll win. Thank God for the victory."

The two teams employed different strategies.

Boys' Town, full of energy, went very hard at Arnett as they forced the offensive for the entire 90 minutes, plus whatever minutes were added to each half for stoppages. The attacks flowed constantly but Arnett, forced into defence, weathered the storm, especially in the first half, and countered well.

"They moved the ball around pretty well, they were changing the angles, moving the ball from side to side but we sat back, soaked up the pressure, then attacked," Davis pointed out.

With much goalmouth activity at the Arnett end, Boys' Town were more threatening but on the afternoon, they lacked the sharpness and composure needed to finish in tight situations as Arnett packed their defence.

Arnett, with Wilson spearheading their attacks, made some threatening breaks and could also have added to their tally.

"I'm very disappointed, was the response of Boys' Town coach, Andrew Price, who injected Oneil McDonald and former national striker Walter Boyd late in the second half, as they hunted the equaliser.

The latter, returning to local football after a near three-year absence, got a mixed reaction as he faced the club with which he won two Premier League crowns. His touches were mainly slick and passing good, but though his team had the momentum, they could not find a way to score.

"We got too many chances. Goals win games and we didn't score, that was our demise today," noted Price.

"It was a good derby, we should've won from the first half but we missed too many opportunities."
