When you think of tequila, the first things that may come to mind are shots and salt or lime to kill the taste. Global Brand Ambassador for Don Julio, Brian Van Flandern is on a mission to make everyone know that there are certainly other ways to enjoy tequila other than in shots.

"Tequila is certainly misunderstood. I am here to change the perception and the ways and practice of drinking it. Certainly the Don Julio tequila is well made, tastes really good and you don't need any salt or lime to get rid of that taste in your mouth. Tequila can be had on its own", said the mixologist.

First time in jamaica

Here for six days, after arriving on Monday, Flandern was invited to Jamaica by Diageo to promote his brand. Being the global ambassador for Don Julio since February of last year, he has been to many countries and islands but this trip is his first to Jamaica. "I have to travel to the best resorts, the best hotels all around the world and teach them about tequila", said Flandern.

While here, his main focus will be to endorse three tequila lines produced by Don Julio. "There are three that I am promoting. The Blanco, which is a silver tequila that is not aged. Also, the reposado, a rested tequila aged for 8 months and the Anejo, tequila aged for a minimum of 18 months." He will be responsible for going to different hot spots and clubs to promote them.

An industry player for 20 years, he regards the opening of his now famous restaurant in 2004 along with Chef Thomas Keller, his biggest achievement to date. "It is called PER SE in New York and it has received many excellent reviews and the highest ratings and stars", said the top mixologist.

Flandern also provides consulting services through his company, Creative Cocktail Consultants Corporation.

Ranked as the number two bartender in the world by the Masters International Championship in 2006 and this year named one of the top 10 bartenders in the world by Travel and Leisure Magazine, he has many accolades to show.

The New York-based Flandern offers pertinent advice to bartenders. "Three important things to remember are:

1. Use fresh ingredients like juices and home-made syrups.

2. Always use high quality spirits, not necessarily expensive ones; just do your research and homework and learn about the history of it.

3.Balance cocktails, always taste them to see if for instance the sugar and alcohol content are fine".
