SDA and the Commish

I must confess than I am confused by the Police Federation's and Seventh-day Adventists' reaction to the commissioner of police's statement. If you take certain jobs (including policing) you can reasonably be assumed to have accepted the normal requirements of that job. In this case it is serving and protecting your brothers seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Without a doubt this will entail working on Saturdays both routinely and in the event of emergencies.

The commissioner of police therefore has my support in this matter. Even his delivery of his point has my support, given the dreadful state of law and order (which is a Christian's desire).

I point out for those of other options the following quote from Matthew 12 vs 11-12: He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep!

Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."

My brothers, let's work together to save this country from mayhem.

A privilege, not a right

Everyone has the right to choose his/ her religion; therefore, the policemen and women have the right to choose their religion and by extension their denomination.

However, before the policemen and women join the force, they should have been aware that policing is an essential service which means that one can be called to work any time. Therefore, being granted Sabbath off is a privilege, not a right. Everyone is entitled to a day off, therefore why not, as far as possible give Sabbath keepers day off on Saturdays so they can attend church?

Sunday worshippers do not adhere to strict worshipping principles on their worship days. They go to church and then leave for work, cook their dinner and do just about anything.

So the 'problem' would not be the same for them. So if Adventists want to keep the Sabbath, let them do that. There are so many ways to accommodate Adventist cops and also Sunday worshippers.

Lack of national pride

I am concerned that so many of our national features do not work. When anyone drives around Jamaica, you will find town clocks not working, cemeteries in poor condition and rubbish piling up in town centres.

It is disturbing to think that the officials, local and central who should be seeing to these things apparently are not interested and do not share the same pride as the rest of us.
