NOTE-WORTHY: Valid criticisms of IMF
Published: Saturday | July 18, 2009
The fact of the matter is that his administration has been elected by the nation to handle the nation's affairs. Had Jamaicans known that they would have to guide the Government's every move through letters to the editor and phone calls to radio talk shows, the administration would bear a different colour.
The IMF has hindered growth in many developing nations under the guise of assistance. Such criticisms are not being pulled from a hat, nor being fabricated for political mileage, they are real. Why do we record history, if not to learn from it?
Months previously were spent on convincing us that the IMF meetings were only talks, please let that be true. Yes, we need external assistance but not the IMF kind.

Cut parish council divisions too
Re: your editorial 'EC and Parliament should think again,' I do believe you're on the mark about decreasing rather than increasing the number of parliamentary constituencies.
However, I would add that the same thing should be done with the parish council divisions. Do away with the parish councils and have county councils instead - say about 25 representatives each in the three counties. Combined with the proposed 45 House Representatives and that's 120 elected reps (excluding mayors). That would be just over 50 per cent drop from the almost 300 combined that's now the case. The millions in salaries saved can then be better utilised as your editorial suggested.

The Acts 2 experience
Following up on the matter of tongues as raised by Devon Dick and another letter writer, yes, the speakers in the Book of Acts spoke in known languages to the hearers (chapter 2:6). This was done with one divine purpose which was to preach the word of God.
In today's church, we see speaking in tongues as a 'status symbol', oblivious of the purpose of such a gift. It seems as if speaking in tongues is more important than seeking God's kingdom and His righteousness.
For the Church to remain relevant, which I know God will ensure, the Church must move from that place of 'self' and move into the realm of righteousness so that the spirit of God can be poured out on this nation.
