Olympic 100-metre silver-medallist Kerron Stewart is Gleaner Sports' Performer of the Week following two impressive runs at the Rome and Paris Golden League meets.

Stewart, a former St Jago High student, became the fifth fastest woman of all time and the second best Jamaican when she clocked 10.75 seconds to win in Rome last Friday. Only former Jamaica sprint queen, Merlene Ottey, with the national record 10.74, has gone faster than Stewart.

US$1-million Jackpot

She followed that up with an easy 10.99-seconds win in the Paris Golden League meet yesterday. Stewart is now just two wins away from taking at least a share of the lucrative US$1-million Golden League Jackpot, following wins in Oslo, Berlin, Rome and Paris.

On June 14 at the first Golden League meet in Berlin, she clocked 11.00 seconds to win ahead of American Stephanie Durst (11.15). At the Bislett Games on July 3, she clocked 10.99 to beat Trinidad and Tobago's Kelly-Ann Baptiste (11.14). Yesterday, a week after her big run in Rome, she again stopped the clock at 10.99, defeating veteran Chandra Sturrup of Bahamas (11.15) and Jamaica's Aleen Bailey (11.26).

The last two Golden League meets will be held in Switzerland on August 28 and Belgium on September 4.
