With only eight races on Wednesday, the Pick-9 returns from a one-day break in all its glory on tomorrow's well-supported Seek/Champion Back to School-sponsored 10-race programme at Caymanas Park.
The Pick-9 will embrace races two to 10, the Super-6 from race five to 10. We look at the Super-6 which gets under way with a $390,000-$340,000 claiming race over 1600 metres to be contested by eight starters, including the recent winners SIMPLE SWEET and PIECE A FOOT.
In addition to this pair, other such as THE SMOKER, DR STEPHANIE and the down-in-class RED LION, who completed a hat-trick of wins in midsummer, should ensure a competitive race.
SIMPLE SWEET really caught the eye when leading home PIECE A FOOT and LATIN KING by 5 1/4 lengths over the distance on August 8, and although claimed out of that race and slightly up in class, looks nicely in with only 52.0g and could give in-form Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas an armchair ride. DR STEPHANIE, now stepping down from high claiming to race on a $390,000 tag, looks her principal danger.
Next is a two-year-old maiden special for the Rhoel Rhoden Memorial Trophy to be contested by 12 youngsters over 1100 metres. Here, the one to beat must surely be TRIAL LAWYER, who made a promising debut as the 4-5 favourite over the round five course on August 8 when just touched off by SILENT IMAGE.
The chestnut gelding from the stables of champion trainer Wayne DaCosta has worked really well since, and with the experience behind him, should make no mistake with champion jockey Omar Walker again in the saddle. The Anthony Nunes-trained MY LADY, third on her recent debut, looks the main danger to TRIAL LAWYER.
They all have the improving American filly SMOOTH DIAMOND to beat in the seventh race following her short-head second to NEW KINGSTON over 1200 metres on August 15.
Trained by Anthony Ferguson, the Smooth Jazz-Treasured filly could be deemed an unlucky loser that day, as she not only received a rough passage when closing, but found herself outpaced in the backstretch after a sluggish start.
Native-bred three-year-olds
SMOOTH DIAMOND will welcome the additional 300 metres of this race, and despite the sound claims of the improving native-bred three-year-olds OASIS and SKY FORCE, she looks the right choice.
POORLITTLERICHBOY, now dropped in class and the trip ideal, gets the nod over the recent winner DUST ROCK and the noted front-runner TRACK STAR in the eighth, race No. 2 in the Champion Betting/CTL Claiming Series over 1400 metres to be contested by 11 starters.
The ninth race (open allowance), for the Seek Exercise Book Trophy over 1300 metres, should see hat-trick seeker HONEYOFALADY, the vastly improved American filly QUICK AND GRAY and this year's 1000 Guineas and Oaks winner SAINT CECELIA (working exceptionally well) in contention at the finish.
While it should be close between them in the nine-horse field, QUICK AND GRAY with a mere 48.0kg definitely looks the pick of the weights following her close second to HONEYOFALADY in the August 1 Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission Trophy race over 1400 metres. The grey filly has won three of her last four races and is genuine to the core.
Then, take the lightly raced but highly thought of RISK REWARDS to beat FIRST EDITION and LAWS OF THE CAT in the closing straight five race in which 14 has been declared.
