Cabinet must cut - Portia

Published: Monday | September 28, 2009

Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller has demanded that Prime Minister Bruce Golding cut the size of the Cabinet and is challenging him to call elections if he is unable to run the country.

Simpson Miller, president of the People's National Party (PNP), was addressing the party's executive in Runaway Bay, St Ann, yesterday in the first National Executive Committee meeting since its annual conference last weekend.

"Don't come to us and ask for cooperation," she declared. "You cannot ask the country for cooperation, Mr Prime Minister, when you continue to retain your mega-size Cabinet. I'm calling on the prime minister to do the honourable thing - cut the size of the Cabinet now!"

Simpson Miller said the Government has no moral authority to talk about reducing the size of the public sector when it has found jobs for virtually every Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) functionary.

"Set the example by cutting them until things are back on track, Mr Prime Minister. No more jobs for the boys."

Simpson Miller said Jamaica has come to see the JLP administration for what it really is, describing it as "incompetent, inexperienced and inadequate".
