Humble Lions coach Christopher Bender has praised his team's toughness following their 1-0 win over Portmore United on Wednesday evening in a Digicel Premier League second-round match at the Ferdie Neita Park in Braeton, Portmore, St Catherine.

"We came here confident to get a result and the three points is a plus. I must commend the team for the discipline and organisation that they showed. They showed a lot of commitment. I also want to thank the spectators who have travelled so far and waited so long for this," Bender said.

Humble Lions striker Errol Wilkie struck early, from the second minute of the game, and his side held on for a precious three points.

Disastrous start

The win moved Humble Lions from the bottom of the table. They are now on 11 points, one ahead of bottom-club August Town, who had a surprise 0-0 draw with defending champions Tivoli Gardens.

Humble Lions have copped four points in two games while Portmore United have had a disastrous start to the second round, with back-to-back losses. On Sunday they went down 2-1 to Arnett Gardens.

Coach of Portmore United, Linval Dixon, had a heated exchange with some of his players during a dressing room discussion at the half-time break, and the club's general manager, Trevin Nairne, fielded questions after the game.

"Another bad day at the office, we conceded a very early goal, a very soft goal," Nairne said. "We rallied and really played well but we didn't score again and this is something that is plaguing the team, and we have to work harder in training to solve this problem, because we keep outplaying teams and not finishing."
