Let the healing begin

When in 1978 Bob Marley called both Mr Seaga and Mr Manley on to the stage and anointed them in the name of peace, this brave gesture, sincere as it was, resulted in both leaders letting down the country's greatest 'entertainer'. I call upon Mavado and Kartel to set an example and create success where the politicians have all let us down. They must immediately preach the doctrine of peace and ridicule and denounce the divisions and unwarranted acts of violence which are based on petty Gaza-Gully differences.
Isn't this an ironic twist in our history, as regards efforts to create lasting peace among our mainly unemployed and idle hands, that 31 years ago, it was the entertainers who sought to forge the peace on our behalf? Let's hope that the waning moral authority our politicians are left with will not detract from the need to broker peace at any cost.
I invite our divided young minds to rise above the poor example that those elected have demonstrated so far, and help heal our crime-sick nation. At the same time, my word to our politicians is that should Bob be allowed to speak from the grave, he would be most upset that those whom he pleaded with for peace have been unable to control the monster they created.
Can we tell the entertainer to remove violence from the stage when we have shoot-outs backstage at political meetings? Let's hope that at this meeting, will be in the nature of those peace and reconciliation hearings held in South Africa, where all who came to the table came to confess and forgive in an attempt to place the cruel past behind them. Let the healing begin.
