Tax offices close later for today's deadline

Published:Monday | March 15, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Tax Audit and Administration Department says it will close one hour later today at 14 tax offices in preparation for the usual large number of people expected to file their income-tax returns on the due date.

The 14 tax offices will close at 5 p.m. today. All other offices will operate their usual hours.

Other measures to accommodate the large number of persons expected to file their returns on 'Tax Day' have also been put in place. Extra staff will be available in the service areas of all tax offices to manage the flow and movement of the lines; ensure that forms are properly completed; direct taxpayers to the correct areas; and process transactions.

At the tax office located in Cross Roads, a tent has been erected outside to accommodate the anticipated crowd. Other crowd-management measures have been implemented at the Constant Spring and King Street tax offices in St Andrew and Kingston, respectively.

Special lines

Persons filing a 'nil' return will be directed to special lines or to use the electronic drop boxes available. Despite the contingencies, persons are advised that they might experience delays.

Taxpayers are further advised that the March 15 deadline for business persons to file income-tax returns will not be extended. This means that all companies, self-employed persons, partnerships, organisations and employed persons who have additional income must file their annual income-tax return for 2009 and their declaration of estimated income and tax payable for 2010 and pay the tax due by today.

Returns filed after today will be considered late and may attract a penalty or sanctions being brought against the taxpayer. Additionally, where no return is filed, a failure to file notice may be issued and/or an estimated return automatically generated by the administration's computerised system or other enforcement action taken.
