Two infants, aged one and three years, are now orphaned after their father attacked and fatally wounded their mother and then hanged himself in Barnett Bush, near Springmount in St James, on Wednesday.
The dead parents have been identified as 35-year-old Kenyouth Brissett and his estranged babymother, 22-year-old Shadae Barker, both of Barnett Bush district.
Police reports are that Brissett and Barker had been in an intimate relationship for some time, but Barker subsequently discovered that the two were, in fact, cousins.
Following this revelation, she wanted to end the relationship, but Brissett refused.
On Wednesday morning, Brissett reportedly confronted Barker while she was on a roadway in their home community with two relatives. A dispute arose between the two, and Brissett used a knife and machete to chop and stab Barker.
Barker died on the spot, and Brissett ran into nearby bushes. The police were summoned and Barker's body was removed to the morgue.
Later that evening, residents discovered Barker's body hanging from a tree by a length of cord. The Mount Salem and Springmount police are investigating.
