Dominic Walter and Kevaughn Campbell won two gold medals for Jamaica on the opening day of the four-day Carifta Swimming Championships last night at the National Stadium pool.

Walter, son of national coach Jackie Walter, won his gold medal in the boys' 15-17 1500m freestyle, clocking 16:56.07.

Campbell, competing in the boys' 200m breaststroke, took home the gold medal in 2:43.21.

Kendese Nangle and Timothy Wynter are expected to lead Jamaica's charge for medals on today's second day of the meet, with action starting at 9 a.m.

Nangle, who is competing in the girls' 15-17 age group, will swim out of Lane Four in Heat Two in the 100m backstroke. The 16-year-old Nangle, who is based overseas, will then compete in her second event of the day, when she contests the 100m butterfly.

Wynter is down to compete in Heat Two of the boys' 13-14 50m butterfly event. Wynter was in spectacular form yesterday when he swam 28.33 seconds in the 50m backstroke to break the national age-group record of 29.94, previously held by Brad Hamilton.

Danielle Boothe, who has recorded a time of 29.97, is the favourite to win the 50m butterfly, while Stefani Webley with a time of 1:13.77 should figure prominently for the hosts in the girls' 13-14 100m backstroke.
