A feeling of helplessness
The Editor, Sir:
While I am alarmed at the rapidly mounting murder toll, your front-page headline leaves me wondering what I can do about it.
I do not have the benefit of the statistics - where the murders are taking place, the motives behind the murders, whether anyone has been caught, etc.
I am left, therefore, with a feeling of helplessness and deep depression.
Perhaps this is your intention.
If not, you may wish to take the numbers off the front page and publish the complete statistics on, say, page four of The Gleaner. This may spur persons within the affected communities to be more vigilant and to cooperate with the police.
