Human scavengers

Published: Saturday | June 19, 2010 Comments 0

THE EDITOR, Sir:

A TELEVISION newscast on Wednesday night reported that another accident had occurred on Spur Tree Hill, Manchester. This time, a truck transporting fertiliser and a Mercedes-Benz car were involved in an accident.

The cameras revealed an injured occupant of one of the vehicles lying face down on the ground. I was rather taken aback at the absence of any form of assistance to this injured man.

I stared with utter shock and revulsion at the sight of able-bodied men and women, whose sole aim were to grab as much fertiliser as possible from the overturned truck. One female bystander gleefully announced on camera "mi nuh get none a di fertiliser". There was no concern expressed as to the possible fate of the injured.

We seem to have become human scavengers, praying for an accident to occur so that we can prey on the misfortunes of our brothers and sisters.

What about compassion, care, concern?

May God help us!

I am, etc.,

Marcia Taylor
