Bermuda picks record 60 for CAC

Published: Sunday | June 27, 2010 Comments 0

HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC):

The Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) on Friday confirmed it will send 60 athletes to compete in next month's Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Puerto Rico, the largest team ever to represent the island at the showpiece.

Triathletes Flora Duffy and Tyler Butterfield, and athletes Arantxa King and Aaron Evans are seen as four of Bermuda's best medal hopes at the Games, to be held from July 17 to August 1.

A dozen bowlers will also be making the trip as will the women's hockey team, two boxers, and six swimmers.

The Games represent a significant financial undertaking for the BOA, as well as the majority of the athletes, who also have to dig into their own pockets to make the trip to Puerto Rico.

"It is difficult for many elite and would-be elite athletes to commit sufficient time to training and also earn or raise enough funds to get them to international competitions like the CAC Games," said BOA Secretary General Philip Guishard.
