Online feedback

Below are edited comments posted by online readers to Monday's feature article on Harcourt Fuller, 'From poverty to PhD'.

Wonderful story

This is such a wonderful story, only if the politicians and other influential Jamaicans could read this amazing transformation. This is to show all Jamaicans, it is not where you are coming from, but where you are going.

- George

Change things

Congratulations on all your successes. I hope you will use them to change things in Jamaica. Killing someone to get his goats is as savage as killing albinos because of the colour of their skin - this is done in Africa. Jamaicans are not Africans; they need to get away from those horrible values.

- Gorin

Overcoming obstacles

Some of us from Two Miles did not see ourselves being consigned to the refuse heap, but believed in ourselves, heeded our parents instructions and dedicated ourselves to working hard to achieve our goals. So proud of another 'Two-Miler' doing well. Interestingly, some of my very dear friends from childhood and my older sibling were killed senselessly, and I'm left to ponder how their lives would have turned out were it not for our propensity to kill each other. Put it down to ignorance, poor conflict resolution skills, the result is the same mayhem. Job well done, Mr Fuller. Children from Two Miles, Spanish Town Road, Union Gardens, Brotherton Avenue, Crescent Road, Kidd Lane - you, too, can become successful. Don't allow the circumstances of your birth to dictate where you end up in life.

- Adrian

Despite the odds

I cannot state enough how I despise the obnoxious, superiority complex that has infested the minds of some who attended these "much-venerated preparatory and traditional high schools." It is as though those of us who attended the less traditional, less-accomplished institutions should not excel beyond the walls of the schools that have blighted our prosperity, our intellect. And then, they act surprise when we do do well.

- Island Yute

Nuff respect Mr Fuller

Your accomplishments have derived from hard work. I have noticed where you have suffered during the dreadful winter months in New York just to achieve your goals. I'm sure that many of your country men were involved in questionable activities during that time, and they may have invited you to partake of their lifestyles, but you had stuck with your vision.

It's a pity this type of news is so few and far in between. For the most part, our Jamaican communities are overwhelmed with distasteful news of our young men and their profound affiliation with drugs and guns.
