Wolmer's duo named captain

Jamaica's team has settled down well at the games village in Moncton, Canada, ahead of tomorrow's start of the 13th IAAF World Junior Championships. The team, which arrived in three batches on Friday after landing in Toronto, had their first training session yesterday.

According to reports reaching The Sunday Gleaner, the team had a meeting late Friday night and two Wolmer's athletes, Dwayne Extol and Danielle Dowie, were named boys' and girls' captain respectively.

The bulk of the athletes will not get into action until Tuesday's second day of competition. On tomorrow's first day, there will be the official opening ceremony and just one event, the women's 3000 metres open.

The Jamaica team will be hoping to surpass the performance of two years ago in Poland where they garnered six medals, including one gold won by former Herbert Morrison High school sprinter Dexter Lee in the 100 metres. Lewis is in Moncton to defend his title. He is the country's best hope once again for gold as he is the joint number-one seed in the event, following his personal best 10.16 seconds over the distance in Europe a week ago.

The female quartet in the 4x400 metres is also the top seed at the meet following their 3:34.43 seconds done at the recent Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in Santo Domingo where they won the gold medal in the Under-20 division.
