Desmond Clarke, chairman of the sports committee at the National Council for Senior Citizens looked on proudly at last Thursday's sports day at Jamaica College in St Andrew. It was another successful staging of an annual event that is used to promote a healthy lifestyle for seniors.
"The seniors really love it. The response continues to be strong from persons from all over the country," he said.
The senior citizens' sports day involves persons 60 years, and over competing in sprint and distance races as well as a handful of modified field events. The games are done primarily for fun, but at the end, awards and certificates are presented to winners.
Roy Thomas 83, was the oldest competitor at this year's games. He sees the event as a great way to help him stay fit.
"It's for fun, but it really helps you to keep in good health. The races get harder each year, but I still enjoy taking part," he said.
