Nesta Carter yesterday assumed the position as the third fastest Jamaican, when he ran a smart 9.86 seconds to win the men's 100-metre dash in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Carter, who has run sparingly this season because of injury, beat American Walter Dix, who was timed in 9.88 seconds.

American JMee Samuels was third in 10.03 seconds.

Carter becomes only the third Jamaican to run faster than 9.90 seconds after Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt, and pushes Yohan Blake (9.95) to fourth all-time on the list.

The time was also among the fastest in the world this year. Only Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt, each with 9.82, and Tyson Gay's 9.84, have been faster.

11.08 seconds

In the women's equivalent Sherone Simpson stopped the clock at 11.08 seconds to finish second behind the USA's Marshavet Myers, who ran 10.99s.

World Championship silver medallist, Kerron Stewart, returning from injury, could only manage fifth in 11.32 seconds.

Simpson has run times of 11.02 and 11.03 so far this season as she returns from knee surgery.

Meanwhile, in the absence of Olympic and World 400-metre hurdles champion Melaine Walker, who has taken the remainder of the season off to recover from injury, Kaliese Spencer continues to position herself as the next great Jamaican 400-metre hurdler, as she won the women's event in a fast 53.72 seconds to finish comfortably ahead of the USA's Sheena Tosta, 55.28 and Jamaica's Nickeisha Wilson, 55.99.

Fourth place

Danny McFarlane was fourth in the men's equivalent in 50.74. Puerto Rico's Javier Culson won in 48.79s.

Dwight Thomas took the men's 110-metre hurdles in 13.35 seconds over World Champion Ryan Brathwaite of Barbados (13.39) and Petr Svoboda of the Czech Republic, 13.39.

Ainsley Waugh (20.79s) was third in the men's 200 metres that was won by American Wallace Spearmon 20.18. The United Kingdom's Marlon Devonish was second in 20.40.

Kenia Sinclair's time of 1:58.78s was good enough for second in the women's 800-metre run that was won by the USA's Morgan Uceny in 1:58.67, while her countrywoman, Jemma Simpson, was third in 1:59.24.
