The Editor, Sir:
The monster of crime in Jamaica has reached a point that it caters for one man. Crime is no respecter of person, place or position and, therefore, there should be no second guessing or separation or need for clarification in the fight against crime.
Many may argue that crime is functional and is needed for social balance, but to what extent or at what cost? Not because it provides job for our security forces and other agencies, forces the erection of prisons, provides benefit for relief aids, that makes it acceptable.
An uncontrolled beast
Crime is a disease that, if not cured or treated, will manifest itself into an uncontrolled beast that eats away our physical, emotional and spiritual beings. The issue of crime and violence affects one and all. The support of everyone is needed, the young, old, big and small, as it affects the fibre of our existence and must be stopped or else there will be no tomorrow.
How do we stop it? Crime did not just appear or developed into a monster, and it would be foolish to think it will just disappear. If we are really serious about its eradication, every man, boy, woman and girl need to recognise that it starts with them (me) and say to themselves "I can". We must first be truthful to ourselves and others, including your enemies, treat every one as how you would like to be treated, especially with respect. The country needs to open the doors for our people, job creation, better ways of socialisation, have a level playing field for all to work and operate in with equal chances. Only through this way can we fight and destroy the monster of crime in our society.
I am etc,
David L. Campbell
