With senior citizens among the most vulnerable to the threat of violence, aggression and intimidation, the Jamaica Constabulary Force in association with United States Agency for International Development, have produced a handbook with helpful tips on protecting self and property.
Some of the tips are listed below.
The booklet was introduced at last week Tuesday's joint Caribbean Community of Retired Persons Limited-Guardsman Group personal safety seminar at Holy Cross Church Hall, Half-Way Tree Road, St Andrew.
Personal safety
Avoid danger spots like quiet or badly lit streets, or isolated car parks.
Avoid passing close to stationary cars that have someone sitting inside with the engine running.
Be careful when using ATMs. Make sure no one is hovering nearby, and do not count your money in the middle of the street.
Never accept a lift from a stranger even if you are wet, tired or running late.
While driving
Don't leave anything on display in your vehicle.
Make sure you have enough fuel for your journey.
Always lock your car even if you are leaving for a short while.
Avoid road rage and always allot extra time for your journey.
Always use a licensed route taxi that you know or that is identifiable.
Confirm the driver's details when they arrive; is it a taxi you ordered?
Sharing a taxi with a friend or sitting in the back is also a good safety strategy.
Avoid parking next to overgrown trees and bushes or objects that can conceal someone.
Keep reading the Flair in coming weeks for more safety tips from the handbook for home and office.
