Many years ago, I came across a concept that has since become a major part of my life philosophy. It was the title of a series of self-development audiotapes by Anthony Robbins - Get the Edge.
This idea resonated with me so deeply that whatever I've done since, I always looked for an edge - a faster, more efficient and elegant way of getting things done or of ensuring I did not fail.
I have since realised that it's some little things that, consistently leveraged, give us the really big advantages at work and in life.
It is by identifying a few key resources, cultivating a few key habits, nurturing a few key relationships, or concentrating on a few key goals that actually result in the greatest effectiveness, productivity and success.
So, here are seven key resources that will accelerate your success dramatically and in a short time, if you're serious about excelling at work and in life.
1. Personal success library
Getting a degree should be the beginning of your education, not the end. If career success is a priority, then your monthly investment in self-education should exceed your entertainment expenses. Aim to read at least one business or personal development book a month.
Start with Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, and The Success Principles by Jack Canfield.
2. Personal computer
By personal, I mean one that you own. Learn to embrace technology, don't fear it or be indifferent. Get one of the fastest, latest machines to work and access the Internet with.
3. Smartphone
I admit, I'm a basic phone kind of guy, or was, anyway. Getting a BlackBerry, however, has made a 'hi-tech phone' convert out of me. I now can't do without 24/7 internet connectivity.
There is also the indispensable multimedia - MP3, video and text - which, in addition to your favourite music, you can listen and watch educational recordings and videos on the go. Personally, my phone is also my 'mobile university'.
You also get to have your contact list, calendar, organiser, journal, to-do lists and camera, all in one handy package.
4. Reliable watch
Separate yourself from the 'Jamaica time' crowd. Be on time, every time. Punctuality is a crucial success discipline.
5. Supportive spouse/partner
Yes, this is a crucial factor in your business or professional success, whether you realise it or not. According to Napoleon Hill, nothing is as important to one's success as the choice of a mate.
After interviewing 733 millionaires, Thomas J. Stanley, author of The Millionaire Mind, revealed that the fourth most important factor in their financial success was having a supportive spouse. Go figure.
6. Personal success team
To succeed big, you need a mentor. Also, you need supportive friends who are genuinely interested in, and will practically support, your success. Identify your team and nurture a mutually supportive mastermind group.
7. Health and fitness programme
Being sick or out of shape will be inimical to your success. Eat right and exercise regularly.
