Cop victim of the unit he loved

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I REMEMBER Sheldon Williams, my classmate, running, kicking the football, having lunch under a mango tree at St Mary High in Highgate. We spoke about life now and then, but more so about how much of a troublemaker he was in class. We spoke about making it 'big'. Unfortunately, he made it big. He made the headlines as a victim of the same unit he loved, protected and served.

My effort in this letter is not to draw pity but to tease a sense of responsibility from the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) whose recent interactions with young Jamaican males have been anything but friendly. Remember 'do unto others as you will have them do unto you'? JCF, we appreciate your efforts to maintain order in this 'Jamaica Land We Love', but can you be a little more tolerant of our sons, fathers and brothers?

I am, etc.,
