The number of reported dengue haemorrhagic fever cases has climbed from three to nine since the start of the week, the Ministry of Health reported Wednesday.
The number of dengue fever cases is now at 123.
Dengue haemorrhagic fever is the more severe form of the virus and could result in death if not treated.
So far, one death, as a result of dengue haemorrhagic fever, has been recorded in the parish of Manchester.
The health ministry was unable to provide more details surrounding the victim's death.
The ministry continues to advise persons to visit a doctor if they are experiencing dengue fever symptoms.
Symptoms include headache, joint or bone pain, muscle pain, skin rash, nausea and pain behind the eyes.
Distinguishing symptom
While the symptoms are hard to tell the difference from flu-like symptoms, Dr Eva Lewis-Fuller, director of health, promotion and protection, noted that pain behind the eyes was a distinguishing symptom of dengue fever.
Symptoms of dengue haemor-rhagic fever include the usual dengue fever symptoms, along with skin bruising; bleeding from the nose, mouth or gums; severe stomach pains; pale, cold and clammy skin; difficulty breathing; fainting and frequent vomiting.
Persons may be exposed to dengue fever up to four times because of the four different virus strains, types one to four.
Lewis-Fuller stressed the importance of using mosquito repellent, being fully clothed, and installing mesh screens on doors and windows.
Persons who wish to obtain more information on dengue may call the ministry's Emergency Operations Centre at 1888-663-5683 (1-888- ONE LOVE).
