The death of alleged gangster Cedric 'Doggie' Murray, who was killed in a reported gunfight with the police on August 12, may have signalled the last hurrah of the notorious Stone Crusher gang, which is based in Montego Bay, St James.

While he was not a founding member of the murderous gang, which had its genesis in the Norwood area of north-west St James in 2001, 'Doggie' became one of its most feared members because, in the language of the street, he was "ice cold" - willing to kill at the slightest provocation.

"Anytime yu see that man dress in full white and tek the street, people dead," a former Stone Crusher member told The Sunday Gleaner last week.

"Unlike some man who sometimes mek other gangsters do their dirty work, him ('Doggie') was a man who deal with things himself," the former gangster said.

Murray seemed to underscore this in an entry in a diary reportedly found by the police after he was killed.

"I stand here looking at this mountain that I had to climb to elude the cops ... . Life for me and my friends is no joke but each day I ask God to not let me wake in anger or else people a go dead," Murray wrote in an entry dated July 17, 2010.
