Watch your words, speedster

Bolt (left) and Gay

I was going to make a few comments about Usain Bolt's new book, simply and appropriately titled My Story, but it is other words from the big man that jarred my rusty brain cells loose.

Bolt, in an interview with BBC radio, said that "Tyson Gay probably just hates my guts." He also said he thought Gay sat at home and cussed him and that he gets very upset because every time he runs fast, he (Bolt) runs faster. I haven't heard the audio clip so I don't know Bolt's tone of voice, ie whether he was joking or not. The fact is, if Gay is the kind of person who gets 'dark' very quickly, then he just might be getting upset now.

I don't get the impression that Gay does stay home and cuss. When he finally beat Bolt in the 100 metres (he had defeated him in the 200 in 2007), Gay was quite gracious in victory. He rightly pointed out that 'Lightning' was not at his best and Asafa wasn't there. But even if Gay does stay home and 'cuss Bolt dawg rotten', this is not the kind of speculation I want the world's fastest man to be making. Even if Bolt said it in jest, I think we all know that many things we consider funny turn out to be anything but, to someone else.

When microphones are put in your face constantly, there is always the possibility you'll say something that, at the very least, you want to tweak a bit, and, at the most extreme, want to take back completely. But as a wise person once told me (well not just me, the entire assembly at high school), there are a few things you can't get back; and the spoken word is one of them. So Bolty, if you can't cut back on the interviews, just make like Oliver Samuels and Volier Johnson in that classic comedy scene; just smile and nod.

Medicine men

On a lighter side to the issue, I wonder if Gay is checking any medicine men in the South? What if he's having somebody work on some voodoo with snakes and crow's feet and that stuff? If Bolt is unknowingly right, then Gay may be plotting some ill deeds on our superstar. I wonder if there's a voodoo doll of Bolt with a pin sticking in the back of it in Gay's closet? Cue the Twilight Zone music!

Then, just when the people on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico were thinking about possibly getting back on track, here comes another explosion aboard an oil platform. Throw in some hurricanes heading that way and these folks look more salt than pig's tail! Talk about not getting a break.

Tell me what you're cussing about at daviot.kelly@gleanerjm.com.
