The Editor, Sir:
I read the letter on 'Religious Freedom' and am in full agreement. I believe under the law we should be able to practise our religion and allow others to do the same.
My question, however, is this: Jamaican people and others are all interested in other people but not their own. As our motto says, 'Out of many one people'. We welcome everyone, but how about taking care of each other before taking care of outsiders?
I am Jamaican and a Seventh-day Adventist. One of the hardest things for me is to find a job. Not simply because of the economic crisis or the lack of jobs ... but mostly because I refuse to work on the Sabbath.
inflexible
I have even agreed to working Saturday nights and Sundays, but was considered inflexible because I refuse to work Fridays and Saturdays. Where is my religious freedom or tolerance? Don't I deserve the same opportunity to work, better myself and contribute to my society while practising my religion?
I am not opposed to Muslims or any other religion. I'm just asking for my freedom to practise my religion while not being excluded from the working society in which I live.
I am, etc.,
