WESTERN BUREAU: With 10 distinctions and a credit in CSEC exams, it would not be presumptuous to describe 16-year-old Sonya Wilson of Harrison Memorial High School in Montego Bay as a genius.
She gained grade ones in English language, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, English literature, Caribbean history, information technology, human and social biology, and agricultural science. Sonya got a grade two in Spanish.
With a career in medicine on her mind, she'll be starting studies at Northern Caribbean University, where she has received a scholarship.
The former head girl is a teacher's dream, according to her vice-principal, Winsome Willis.
"She is a very hard worker who is respectful and selfless in helping others," said the administrator.
Howard Wilson, who teaches at St James High School, said his daughter was self-motivated and needed very little supervision.
Sonya, who lives with her father, mother Merlin Wilson, a nurse practitioner, and younger brother, Howard Jr, balances activities at school and the Welcome Hall Seventh-day Adventist Church in Springfield, St James, helping to make her a well-rounded person.
Spending time with friends is one of her hobbies, emphasising her deep love for people.
"I don't like to see people in difficulty; wherever I can help, I just help," said a seemingly reserved Sonya.
"Part of her regular day is helping others who may be having some challenges, which demonstrates her genuine care for others," doting dad concurred.
