Police statistics show that 78 persons were killed last month, the lowest for any one month period in the last eight years.

The Police High Command said the last time murders fell below 80 for any one month period was in July 2002, when 72 homicides were reported.

The figure for September represents a decrease of 54 from the 132 murders recorded for September last year.

It is also the fourth straight month murders have dipped below 100.

The 78 murders in September compare with the 187 and 173 recorded in May and March this year.

Since the start of the year, at least 1,115 persons have been killed, 136 fewer than the number recorded for the first nine months of last year.

Other categories of major crimes such as shooting, rape, carnal abuse, robbery and larceny also showed declines when compared with the corresponding period last year.

Break-ins were the only category of major crime to record an increase in September.
