Old guard vs young turks nonsense

Published:Wednesday | October 13, 2010 | 12:00 AM

WHY SHOULD a politician be forced or encouraged into retirement when he/she is in good physical health and is passionate about his/her job? This is unfair. Doctors, lawyers, architects, journalists, etc, are usually still active in their professions well into their 60s and 70s, and sometimes beyond. There is space for all age groups in politics and public life.

The current talk about 'the old guard' vs 'the young turks' is nonsense and has no place in Jamaica's vibrant political culture. There are several older persons in various sectors of Jamaican life who are still active in their professions and who are very effective at doing their jobs, namely, the Hon Oliver Clarke, Pat Ramsay, the Most Hon Edward Seaga, the Hon Maurice Facey, Professor the Hon Errol Miller, Dr Knox Hagley, Leonie Forbes and Wilmot 'Motty' Perkins, to name a few.
