Jamaica's only salvation

THE EDITOR,Sir:

In his article titled 'Why corruption stinks', published in The Sunday Gleaner of December 12, Ian Boyne once again demonstrated his understanding of the problems affecting our society and the solutions needed. Highlighting what he sees as some of the reasons for Contractor General Greg Christie's preparedness to pursue any corrupt, or suspect corrupt public official, Mr Boyne correctly attributes this missionary-like zeal of Mr Christie's to his lack of obsession with money and popularity. Mr Boyne went on to say that because Christie cares nothing about playing golf with so-and-so, he is not afraid to embarrass anyone.

What is terribly sad though about Mr Boyne's article is that he felt forced to give God thanks for the fact that out of 2.7 million of us, only one man can be found with such admirable qualities of integrity and moderation.

Without a doubt, the country is balancing on the brink of a moral abyss.

It is often said that people get what they deserve in terms of political representation. How could a country witness the level of integrity demonstrated consistently by Greg Christie and go and elect the kind of political representation that currently obtains in our nation? The world is not lacking in evidence showing that failure to be obsessed with wealth is the surest avenue for ineffective political representation.

I am, etc.,
