DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT of Police Edgar Brown, who died of cancer in the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, late November, is described as one who stood tall among his peers.
DSP Brown, who was named Lasco's Top Cop of the Year in 2001, will be laid to rest on Sunday, January 2, 2011. He was 53.
In describing his late colleague, Assistant Commis-sioner for Area Two, Derrick Shand, said, "He was a star that shone brightly, an ideal policeman, one who was very dedicated. I could also describe him as a walking Christian who stood up for good principles and maintained a high standard. He stood tall above his peers and will long be remembered as the perfect man, wonderful co-worker, father and friend".
Brown's immediate supervisor, Superintendent of Police and commanding officer for the St Mary division, Dudley Scott, also lamented his passing, describing Brown as an officer with a high level of integrity, a professional and trustworthy individual. He also remembered him as a people person, who was willing to go the extra mile, and an excellent investigator.
"I recall when he came from the Criminal Investigation Branch in St Ann to take up position as deputy superintendent with special responsibility as community safety and security officer for the parish of St Mary," said Scott.
"There was an upsurge [in crime] in Enfield District in St Mary, and he was the officer that I assigned to ensure that Enfield gets back to the stage of calm and tranquility. He did so and transformed that area into one where everyone can visit and feel safe.
"He brought back peace and tranquility to that community. He regained trust and confidence between the community members and the police. It's all positive about Edgar, I have never heard any negative statement by anyone about Edgar Brown. He will be sadly missed."
In September 2008, Brown was presented with the Inspectors' Branch Board Integrity Award and commended by both Prime Minister Bruce Golding and then Minister of National Security Colonel Trevor MacMillan, for his role in recovering $45 million from would-be robbers - who had shot and killed a security guard in the process - and returned it to its legitimate owner.
