Don't hold Jamaica hostage

Published:Saturday | January 8, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Minister Mike Henry is correct that the country should not be held hostage by any group, and so his response to JATOO is understandable. Unfortunately, too many groups, when they seek to deal with the Government, do so in a confrontational fashion. Surely, there can be dialogue without the sabre-rattling.

Having said that, the posture of Minister Henry could have been different, and he could have agreed to a meeting. Certainly, this should not be under the threat or ultimatum but before the opening of the transport centre. We need to learn, in this country, that we can adequately discuss the issues that concern us without putting the public at risk and without causing acrimony.

Both sides have made a mountain out of a molehill. We need to step back and learn how to communicate.

I am, etc.,

HAROLD MALCOLM
