Never a dull moment

Dears, it's true, there's never a dull moment in this land of the fabulous as the 'ackee-pod' was buzzing all week with the latest carryings-on of the well-to-do and the near-rich-and-famous, not to mention the extraordinary bleaching powers of blue soap.

From sweetheart deals to bleaching performers and the official opening of the new airport, it's been one very busy and long week of intrigue and shenanigans that has given even the most ardent people-watchers great difficulty in keeping up with the unfolding 'stew' and all that!

Now, let us start with the Ian Fleming Airport. The new facilities are not yet complete but, when all is in place, the airport should make for a welcome intervention in flying time and, consequentially, ease in congestion, as well as aid the smooth arrival and departure of those with private aircrafts flying in to holiday in St Mary or St Ann.

Branding

There's no problem with the airport. There is, however, a problem with its branding! By branding it and naming it the Ian Fleming Airport, those who have done so have highlighted the operational time warp within which they operate, as tourism is no longer about the 1960s sun, sea and rum, that the Ian Fleming era represented. Today, there is a far more techno-savvy generation who want more from the destination and, as long as those in charge of policy direction are stuck with the banana-boat mentality, we will continue to have a first-class product, heavily discounted at second-rate prices to attract visitors because of our lack of vision.

Speaking of vision!

Why was the airport not named in memory of the late visionary Abe Issa, who not only put that community on the tourism map by building Couples Tower Isle, out in the boondocks at a time when people thought him mad for doing so?

And if, as it has be reported, Issa was one of those who initially donated the land to facilitate the Boscobel Airport, what better way to honour him than to have renamed the new facility in his honour?

And, finally, why do we continue the practice of low-balling ourselves and promoting self-denigration by elevating others above self? It's now high time to emancipate ourselves.

Anyway my darlings, let's continue our infrastructure upgrade and now move on to the Ken Jones Aerodrome in Port Antonio. But, please, as tempting as it will be, let's not name this one the Noel Coward International Airport!
