Kellion Knibb of St Jago High accounted for the first female record to fall at the 2011 staging of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships at the National Stadium.

St Jago, however, were knocked off the lead by defending champions Holmwood Technical, who have 38.50 points after six finals over two days of competition. The top five is completed by Edwin Allen High (36), St Jago (34), Vere Technical (27) and Manchester High 18.

Knibb had a throw of 13.64 metres to capture the girls' shot put open and in the process eclipse Candicea Bernard's record of 13.52, which was established last year. Vere's Serena Canegan (12.10m) took the silver, while Edwin Allen's Danniel Thomas (12.04m) claimed the bronze.

Edwin allen disappointed

Despite picking up the bronze medal, Edwin Allen were left disappointed as favourite Sasha-Gay Marston, who earlier this year threw 13.71m and had, on the opening day, captured the Class One girls discus title finished fourth with a throw of 11.98m.

Knibb was proud of her achievement.

"I am feeling very proud, overwhelmed and more confident to go into tomorrow," a beaming Knibb stated. "I was very confident going into the event as I have thrown further than that in training and I knew all I had to do was come out and execute," she added.

The 17-year-old fifth-form student will tomorrow look to defend her javelin title and hunt for gold in the discus.

Another pre-meet favourite, Danique Bryan, failed to deliver for Edwin Allen in the Class-Three girls high jump. Despite coming into the Championships having cleared 1.75m at Central Champs, she could only achieve a clearance of 1.65m, which was only good enough for fourth. However, as was the case on the opening day in the Class-One girls' discus, another Edwin Allen athlete captured the gold medal. Onessa Patten took the event ahead of Immaculate's Safia Morgan, with Man-chester High's Annastacia Forrester, third. All three athletes cleared 1.70m, but the placings were determined based on count back.

Baker wins long jump

Holmwood and Excelsior shared the bulk of the points in the Class-Four girls' long jump. The Holmwood pair of Colestia Baker and Garnesha Campbell contributed 16 points to their school's bid for their ninth straight title. Baker leapt a distance of 5.37m to take the event ahead of Campbell (5.24m). Excelsior's Voshon Lynch (5.19m) took the bronze medal ahead of her teammate Ave-Anna Venair (5.06m).

In the other girls' final of the day, Holmwood's Janieve Russel upstaged Manchester's defending champion and record holder Chanice Porter to take the gold in the Class-Two girls' long jump. Russell won with a leap of 6.26m, with Porter (6.06m) taking silver and the bronze going to Opal James (5.82m) of St Elizabeth.
