"The minute we are alive, we can be developed." These are the words of Patrice DaCosta, president of Stoosh Images and international style consultant. She was addressing an intimate gathering of corporate women at Chronicles in Manor Park Shopping Centre, St Andrew, recently.

Among the areas of concern covered during the interactive seminar, DaCosta highlighted the importance of first impressions, so women of all ages should avoid adopting the attitude of: "OK", "can't bother" and "drag on". She said the day you decide it's OK to simply drag on any old thing because you just can't bother, is the day you could bump into someone you are trying to impress and send the wrong signal.

"Don't hinder yourself with a wrong first impression; you are in charge of yourself, so develop a positive attitude when it comes to your personal appearance, behaviour and communication (ABCs)."

DaCosta left many useful tips with the women present including:

Dress in proportion with your body

If clothes can't be worn three different ways or be accessorised three different ways, don't buy them.

Darker denim jeans are for more formal wear while the lighter the jeans, the more casual they are.

All women should have a fitted white shirt and a natural-colour pair of shoes.

For a more expensive look, avoid polyester, and remember that pearls are a must (they come in different colours).

The right clutch is essential and you can make it look a lot more eye-catching by adding a huge brooch.

Handbags are critical, but if you are big busted, avoid huge horizontal bags. If you have small breasts, go for a wider bag.

A wrap top or dress is flattering for women of all sizes.

Go shopping in your own closet first and experiment with new colour combinations that you would not normally try.

The more matched you are, the older you look, plus it shows no creativity.

Mid-calf lengths age you, skirt lengths should be where the natural indentation on your leg is.

Gym shoes are strictly for the gym!

DaCosta answered many questions and used items of jewellery and accessories and fabric swatches to give practical demonstrations during the seminar.
