On your mark, set, go!... The Gleaner's Daegu to London project sprints ahead
The Gleaner Company will today launch its Daegu to London Olympic coverage with a public forum examining the topic 'Making money in track and field' at the Knutsford Court Hotel, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Noted sporting aficionado Carole Beckford, who is also the public relations representative of world and Olympic 100m and 200m champion and world record holder Usain Bolt, will deliver the keynote address, exploring emerging opportunities for Jamaicans who are interested in charting a career around the sport.
The Gleaner Company, through its multidimensional platforms - print, online and radio - has embarked on an unprecedented 14-month special coverage of track and field, inclusive of 13 major local and international meets.
Things actually got under way last month with the blanketed coverage of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Champion-ships at the National Stadium in Kingston, and also featured extensive coverage of the IAAF World Youth Championships from Lille, France, and the Junior Pan Am Champion-ships in Mirimar, Florida, both in July.
This month's IAAF World Cham-pionships in Athletics, scheduled for Daegu, South Korea, is the biggest event on the track and field calendar this year, and The Gleaner will be represented in the Asian city in full force, as the Daegu to London project shifts gears.
Among the meets to be specially covered under this project are: The Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, with 2012 bringing the Gibson Relays, the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls' Cham-pionships, the Penn Relays, the JN Jamaica Invitational, the IAAF World Junior Championships, and the Olympic Games in London wrapping up the programme.
