LETTER OF THE DAY - Love your gay boys
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Owing to my association with various groups, I have recently been made aware of the plight of several gay Jamaican teens, which compelled me to use this medium to appeal on their behalf to their parents and relatives.
I know that it cannot be easy for parents to find out that their son is gay. We have all been raised in a predominantly Christian cultural environment, where the evils of homosexuality are preached in Church and reinforced on the streets by popular culture.
However, these young men are not just any random homosexual on the street whose sexuality may disgust you. They are your sons, nephews, brothers. They are the cute little babies that kept you up at nights; the little boys you worried about when they went off to school for the first time; the ones who you loved before you knew about their sexuality.
I know that it may be too much to ask that you accept them as they are, but what I am asking is that you show them some compassion. As the Bible teaches in Matthew: "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
Even if you think that they are the lowest of the low, please do not abandon them; please do not abuse them; please do not turn them out on the streets. Continuing to show them love and compassion is the godly thing to do. It's the humane thing to do and it's the right thing to do.
